Default 97 Protege 180k miles transmission problem

I have a 97 protege with 180K miles. The symptoms exist in the shifting of the automatic transmission. Fluid level is good.

Sometimes, and at any speed , when I press on the gas, with the transmission in gear, (O/D off or on) the engine RPM's increase, but the transmission does not respond and the car does not increase in road speed. When I take my foot off of the gas and let the RPM's drop, and then press on the gas again, the transmission will normally engage, but sometimes will not.

The problem is intermittent, but is getting worse in frequency of occurrence and extent.

When I am at a cruising speed, everything appears to work normal.

When I first start the car in the am and drive about 2/10 of a mile and then stop, when I press on the gas the car is very slow on take off. It appears as though the transmission is in 2nd or 3rd gear and did not return to 1st, but I can't be sure.

At cruising speed of about 55-60, when the road starts to incline, the RPM's increase and decrease between 2500 to about 3000 RPM, in a surging type of presentation, but the vehicle does not increase its road speed. It is almost like the engine is trying to find the right RPM. I checked the TPS per the manual and it appears to be working. As a note, this symptom goes away on flat terrain.

The worst symptom is when traveling at cruising speed and exiting the highway, onto an inclined exit, if I remove my foot from the gas (sharp curve) and then press on the gas the RPM's increase, but no engagement of the transmission.

If anyone can point me in the right direction as to where to start looking for the source of the problem, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Jay

I am no expert at all, but I have had transmission problems in a Toyota and a Honda (the transmission in my 2000 Mazda Protege w/ 95000 miles is currently performing perfectly.)

The symptom you describe is apparently called "slipping" It is good that you have confirmed the fluid level is in the range.

I would get two quotes from local transmission shops, but only if they take time to do test drives, with you riding shotgun.

Good Luck!
