Default 96 protege coolant temp sensor

my car won't start unless my coolant temp sensor is disconnected. if it does start, the engine warms up quickly, but doesn't appear to be overheating from the gauge and if I turn the engine off after it has warmed, it will not start again unless it has cooled.. my sensor and the harness was wet from oil leaking from valve cover gasket.

To test the ECT sensor you need to know the temperature and the resistance value that the sensor has at that temperature. look in the Haynes manual, chapter 6-4. There is a graph that gives you the Ohm values.

Kinda wanted to test the sensor and the harness cause both of them had oil in them. I have the factory service manual and it only shows testing procedures for the sensor. Does anybody want to unplug theirs and test the voltage you get on each side of the harness? I know I'm getting some voltage.

Key ON, engine NOT running. You should get 5V. (Haynes Manual)

Okay great. Is that on the left or right side of the connector with it unplugged?

thanks i unplugged it and got about 5.7 v on the left side. also having trouble removing this exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold. i removed the manifold cover/ insulator and o2 sensor, but it seems impossible to get a wrench on the pipe. i even tried an adjustable. i have a diagram included. the pipe is circled in yellow.

That looks like the EGR pipe to me. I have never messed with it. So I am not much help.
Why do you want to take it off? If it is seal and not plugged up there is no need to touch it.
