A '94 Protege? That's almost a classic!
Maybe the plastic bushings in the shift linkage are worn out too much. That is definitely worth checking.
Then make sure the clutch cable or hydraulics are working correctly. If it is a cable it can be adjusted under the hood.
If it is hydraulic you may want to replace all brake fluid for the brakes and for the clutch hydraulic system. They share a compartment in the brake fluid reservoir. And check the master and slave cylinders for leaks.
Another possibility is that the gearbox is shot: the synchro rings may be kaput.
A bad clutch should result in slipping. If you need a new one the flywheel should be at least resurfaced.
I think this generation Protege looks very nice. The rear looks so much like the MB 190 (baby Benz). But most of them are rusted away.

dont know if the problem is a bad master cylinder or a bad slave? just go to home depot and buy an m10x1 bolt. unscrew the rigid clutch line that goes to the slave cylinder from the rubber hose that comes from the master cylinder. put some teflon tape on the bolt threads and screw it in the rubber hose. now, work the clutch pedal. if it goes to the floor then your problem is the master cylinder. if it holds, then the problem is at the slave cylinder.

Hmm... all the lower gears, huh? Yep, sounds like its slipping. And if you get hard on the power I'd bet it would slip even more (5th gear?)
(edit) Oh, if changing the clutch, and especially if it was already slipping, it needs to be either replaced or turned and trued. Don't subject a new clutch to a bad flywheel. Not cool.

virgin has a point. our friend says that he cant use the gears. does it means he cant engage them or does it means they just slip? if you cant engage them, try replacing the plastic bushings. if they slip, then a new clutch might be the cure.

that is true. with the engine not running, you should be able to engage the gears. if the plastic bushings are bad, you may have trouble trying to navigate from one gear to the next. 1st and 2nd are to the extreme left and 5 is to the extreme right of the stick travel. those bushings are very cheap.

If it's a matter of the shifter not allowing the car to go into these gears, which the more I read here the more it makes sense, then a worn or missing shifter bushing would be the culprit. But one would think the operator could tell if this were the case? BunchOfTostadas, is your shifter sloppy feeling?
