you got spark and fuel
the only part would be air or lack of
clogged air filter or malfuctioning mass air flow sensor
but could be weak ignition system

Are you getting spark at the right time though. Might want to just make sure the timing belt is ok and did not jump a few teeth. Is a fairly quick and easy by just removing the valve cover. At least it would confirm or rule that out.

When installing the new timing belt did you insure that all timing marks were correct? Or did you install the new belt in place of the old one?

The igniter only controls when the coil fires spark with the signal from the pick-up coil. It does not control the intensity. It either works or it does not, no in between.

Heywood,
I have 92 Mazda protoge and it does not start either.
I am using the car and it runs great but sometimes when i go on small errands thats when i notice this problem.

It cranks but does not start. I have new time belt and probably other parts work finr as well.
What i have noticed is when it gives me that problem, i can smell a lot of GAS...it also gives out some kind of smoke.

I have a low quality not original mufler.. anyone thinks that it may have to do with it? when i let the car sit for 10 -15 mins and when i try back it starts..
