5th Gear Jumping Out
Hello,
Got a 1997 Protege, 5-speed. When I shift into 5th gear, it keeps popping out (I can hold it in 5th if I push on the shifter). Took off transmission cover for the 5th/reverse gears and replaced the synchros (2)and 5th/Reverse clutch hub assembly. Did not correct the problem. I am now starting to think it is the 5th gear itself. The teeth in the 5th gear where the clutch hub assembly engages, looks a little worn. All other teeth look fine. Could this be the problem? Not sure of the tollerance?
Inspection of the shift linkage looks normal. I am scratching my head on this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
David

my old geo did that before the tranny went. i think that the clutch may be going right now and the tranny will be next if nothing is done. i would do the clutch and the 5th gear. do you notice any problems pushing it into 1st or 3rd gear?
Hi,
Thanks for the response. Thereare no problems with any of the other gears. The "foot" clutch has been changed for the transmission (not sure if that is what you meant?). I have also changed the 5th/Reverse clutch hub assembly in the transmission. The 5th gear itself is the only item I have not changed yet, but I am ordering one now for $114 from the dealer.

Hello Everyone,
Just wanted to provide an update to my problem. We changed the 5th gear itself and that solved our problem. Our guess is a lazy driver probably accidentally pulls the shifter out of 5th too many times without clutching and over time, wears out the 5th gear teeth that engage with the 5th/Reverse Clutch Hub Assembly (we are just guessing). When we compared the new 5th gear with the old 5th gear, the wear was very noticeable.
Again, just wanted to post in case this helps anyone else. By the way, the 5th gear is very accessible without having to drop the transmission. Easy change.
