2006 Mazda Protoge knock

2006 Mazda Protoge knock
2006 Mazda Protoge, just purchased @ 157K mi. I get a knocking noise that sure sounds like it's coming from the RR tire area.
Conditions requisite are:
Car in D, but WITH the brake pedal applied. The knock presents itself between 1500-2000rpm. This happens with the car is stationary.
This is a FWD car which confuses the bejabbers out of me how there could be a knock that sounds like something is slapping against a body part. ALMOST sounds like something knocking against the splash shield in the RR wheel well area/fender cover.
Any thoughts?
