Hard to say without hearing it. They do eat plugwires frequently. If the noise is in the bottom end it could be a rod or even the P/S pump. I have seen P/S pumps sound just like a rod knock. You just need to isolate the noise. I use a stethescope but you can use a long piece of metal and hold it to your ear and place the other end on various locations on the engine to isolate it. Be careful though.

I have seen distributors knock due to a loose timing belt. Not on one of those though. The timing belt tensioner could have failed, they knock when they do and it is on the bottom end. You just need to isolate the noise im afraid. It could be a lot of things.
