Default 2002 Protege 5 timing belt change

Hi folks,
What is the going rate to replace the timing belt? Should I do the waterpump also? The car has 103,000 miles. Dealer job or independent?
Thanks,Mike

2.6 hours is listed labor time for timing belt. Add 1/2 hour for front cam and crank oil seals and another 1/2 to 1.0 hours for water pump. Replacing the water pump is always a good idea as it is most likely not going to last up to the next timing belt interval at 200k miles. Any competent mechanic can do this job so where you get the work done is up to you. Dealer will use OE part and aftermarket usuually uses aftermarket parts. I perfer OE myself but they are more costly. Dealer mechanics should also be aware that the timing belt tensioner spring needs to be removed from the pin on the block when relieving timing belt tension or guarantee it will be overstreatched and insufficient tension will be put on the timing belt upon reassembly.
