Default 2002 Protege 5 automatic transmission problem.

Hello,

I have aquired a 2002 Mazda protege 5 Automatic with 45,000 miles on it. The problem that I have with this vehicle is that it seems to slip when you put the pedal down to the floor. The mazda accelerates fineto about 3500rpm, but once it goes past that it seems to slip, it will rev all the way upto 6,000 rpm but the car will not accelerate, once it shifts to the next gear the car will begin to acclerate again. It also seems very slow, I have a 1998 toyota corolla automatic that will blow the doors of this mazda. Any suggestions as to what might be wrong with this vehicle. It does have a proper level of transmission fluid in it, and looks like it has been taken care of. The shifts are smoth, not jerky, and the engine runs perfect. I do not get a transmission trouble light.

Thank you

it sounds like a torque converter, and the clutch packs are just about worn out, might need to just get a rebuild..

My wife 2002 Protege auto tranny fluid has never been changed with current 63K miles.
I'm going ahead and change it myself instead taking to the dealer.
Can anyone tell me what type of auto transmission fluid I need and if I should also change the tranny filter? Thanks.
