Default 2002 Mazda protege 5 rough idle. Code cylinder 1 misfire.

I bought this little car for 400.00. It had been in a wreck . Front passenger side. Its been a project. The timing belt was frayed so I got a new one did some research and change it out along with the front and side motormounts. It started right up and seemed to run ok but had a code. Cylinder 1 misfire. Which could be a lot of things. So I'm new to the Mazda thing but I've worked on a lot of different imports , its always a learning curve. The idle is erratic and only at about 600 rpm. When I push it up to about 1100 it seems to smooth out. Then when I'm driving , right about 4000 rpm I hear a rattle that sounds like maybe a loose valve , so I shift gears and it's gone. I'm wondering if the valves might need adjustment. It has 164,000 miles and I have no history on it. Today ill check the timing and look for vacuum leaks. My question is valve adjustment. Has anyone done it.? Any tips or tricks . I don't have a manual yet. Tight budget. Thanks

Your P0301 code (Cyl1 Misfire) is likely a bad spark plug or spark plug wire. You should work to eliminate the code before you start anything else.

More on the P0301 code is here:

You can also search Youtube for videos.

Good Luck

Off the top of my head... Replace the two coils. May as well do plugs and wires at the same time. I was able to buy Mazda parts from my local dealer, but it seemed like those were becoming more scarce. If you don't need them now at 164k, you will need them sooner than later. May as well get them now while you can still get actual Mazda parts.
