Need help with my daughter's 2000 Protege.

The heater works great and blows out the front and bottom but it won't blow out the top (defrost).

 

The climate control looks like this:


I think I can tell the selector is electrical. On the receiving end of the harness should be an actuator that operates a door inside the air box. This door is either jammed or the actuator is broken or the circuit is interrupted. That interruption could be caused by a bad switch, a short to ground, a short between wires etc.

A thourough inspection should let you find the culprit.

If it happens to be cable operated it is purely mechanical and you may find a broken plastic piece or detached cable.
