When replacing the struts for your 1999-2000 Protege, please consider going with the struts for the 2001-2003 models. The mount for the swaybar endlink was moved up by 3 inches to reduce the links frequently snapping or breaking.
You have to use the swaybar links for the newer models to make this happen.
The Mazda part number for the 12" sway bar link is LC62-34-170B
When I switched mine, I went to the junkyard and got some struts from a low mileage 2002. The struts replace the older ones exactly with no issues.
KYB is the manufacturer for the original Protege struts (stamped right on them)
