1996 Protege Drivers Front Axle Won't Pull Out of Tranny
Hello everyone,
I hope that someone could please help me. I am trying to remove the left front axle on my 96' Protege 1.5lsince the CV Joints were all broken, etc... I have the whole left front apart and I cannot pull the axle out of the transmission no matter what. I have pried and pulled until my hands have gotten so cut up. I have gotten it to come out of the automatic transmission maybe a 1/4 inch. Am I missing something here?? That clip is all the way into the transmission on the end of the axle shaft, so it cant be that. What might be holding it in. Thank you all in advance for any needed help as I am freezing outside everyday... Thanks, Graham

Grahm,
I got mine out (drivers side), there is absolutely no way to pry the axle out as the book says, ... too much stuff in the way. BUT I was able to wedge mine out..
What I mean is, I bought a pry bar set from autozone (about six in package) these have angle tips, I took the smallest one , or second to smallest one (cant remember) and turned to so the hump was pointed it out, placed it under axle rim, next to tranny, an beat the handle end with a small sledge hammer... POP! wedged it right out. There is one slot where you can get the pry bar in, but no room to pry, so try wedging! It helps to have a good light.
good luck to all, don't give up, this is the hardest axle I have ever pulled, due to no room! but try the wedge.

its fairly simple take a peice of rope tie a loop on bolth ends then loop one end around the base of the evil cv at the tranny and stuff about half the loop behind the base of the cv, then at the other end of the rope put the loop u made over the handle of a good sledge hammer and swing away. when done properly the cv should pop rite out on either side but be careful with the rope or you will tear apart the cv your working on.
