1995 Mazda Protege wont shift out of park
Hey, I have a Mazda protege that wont shift out of park. It happened before but after a while, it decided to shift. Now its not shifting at all. I've tried the over ride button for the shift lock with no success. Ive examined the brake light sensor, and it has continuity. I don't know where to go from here.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.
My P5 recently did the same thing - I had to remove the housing console and break the plastic safety switch - I put everything back together and I have not had a problem since. It has to do with the brake not engaging the plastic safety switch. The plastic safety switch wears out over time.
I hope this helps.
I hope this helps.
also....there is a electronic actuator underneath the gear selector center console which is activated when you press on the break. Because of its location it has a tendency to gunk up - try dropping a few drops of 3in1 lubricating oil or something similar. Tap on the breaks a couple times to see if it "cleans up".
Thanks for the quick responses. I feel bad because my response wasn't too speedy but anyway, I'll try the second fix before taking apart the housing and breaking the switch.
In removing the console, I found a problem. The shift stick was in the way and I couldn't pull out the console. This means i got no-where. I poured a little rubbing alcohol down the stick to see if it would help.
So I was checking the brake stop light switch, which has continuity, and I found that it is just not getting any electricity. There is no power going to it. Any way to find out where the wire is bad?
You will have to find a wire diagram.
First, how do you know it is "not getting eletricity" ?
Did you check each side to ground and hot?
Try just unplugging it. Probably wont help as your problem is stuck shifter. As previuos poster stated, there is your prblem. You will have to manually move the lock out of the way and secure it.
I hope he explains it to you because I have never seen an automatic protege (except in the funkyard.)
