Default '03 Mazda Protege5 - High Cold Engine Idle & Dim Dash Lights

I've just joined the Mazda Forum and look forward to learning and sharing information about the P5. I have just begun to experience a high engine idle (2k RPM) when cold starting. It quickly drops to 1.5K and then slowly climbs backk to 2k. Once the engine is warm the idle stays in the 750 RPM range. Is this a dirty throttle body or failing sensor? Is it a do-it-yourself fix? Also, my speedo/tach instrument lights do not get very bright. They are hardly noticeable until it is quite dark outside - is this just a design flaw of this car? My car has 55,000 gentle miles on it and is a five speed.
