So my wife was driving her mx6 today and when its in reverse it only goes forward. not sure what happened all the sudden. Any thoughts?

 

It pretty much has to be internal. A planetary, burnt clutch pack/etc. Possibly a stuck valve in the valvebody but not likely. That is assuming it is an automatic transmission. There is a HUGE difference in the two and you don't say in your post.
