Default Over Charging the battery

Hello, i have a 1992 mx-3. the charge light came on last night. i put a volt meter on it and it is over charging the battery causing it to make the battery acid boil out of the caps. any idea what is wrong. is it my alternator, voltage regulator??? please help

The voltage regulator is the likely culprit but since it's intregal with the alternator, that unit will have to be replaced. Most shops (even most parts stores) will test the charging system for either no charge or a nominal amount so it's a good idea to do that before you start replacing parts.

Good luck - I hate electrical problems!

The alternators can get a bit expensive - over $160 around here. If its just the regulator inside you can get an alternator guy to rebuild it cheaper or pick one up at a junkyard. I found that some kia sephia models 94-95 also has the same alternator assuming you have the 4cyl.
