Hi Guys
I own a 93 mazda mx6 V6 and got a timing belt and water pump service done recently...I have realised while driving that the engine heat indicator on the instrument panel keeps fluctuating..It always tends to heat up to extreme and then cools down..This happens all the time..I would really appreciate if any of you folks who might have encountered a similar situation can throw some light on as to what might be wrong.

It sounds as if you are low on coolant. Be sur to check when the engine is cold. If it is full, then I would suspect a thermostat.

The coolant system may have had an air pocket after the water pump service. The pocket may have worked its way out and now have a resulting low coolant level.

Thanks for your response.I checked the coolant and it is full.One more thing I noticed is when i drive on freeway like at 80 mph the engine temp remains normal..np whatsoever..So you think the thermostat might need to be replaced?

I would say thermostat. It controls coolant flow through the radiator. It is inexpensive to replace. If it has not been replaced, it would be best to do it anyways...very cheap insurance.

 

If the overheating is tending to occur only when in town or low speeds but is fine on the freeway then might also give a look to make sure the cooling fans are operating. Plenty of airflow thru the radiator when at higher speeds but very limited in stop and go.

 

I'm having a similiar problem with my 92 MX-3 as it continues to overheat. I've replaced the thermostat, water pump and just today a new radiator and its continues to overheat. Coolant continues to flow into the reserve tank. It runs fine but after 20 miles later it begins to overheat. I'm lost for answers which is why I'm here.

 

Cooling fans coming on when it starts to overheat? Should come on with coolant temp of 207'F on 4 cylinder and 212'F on V6.

I finally got the problem fixed.The radiator in my MX6 was clogged and as a result had to get a new radiator installed..So far there has been no overheating of the engine..I also got a new thermostat installed just in case...
