Default 1994 MX3 popping sound and 30% compression loss

Howdy all ,

I own a 1994 Mazda MX3 with 136K miles on it. I recently unknowingly over-revved to approximately 6k RPMs in 4th gear at which point it began to decelerate until I began to shift into 5th gear when it suddenly stalled. I replaced the timing belt and water pump two months prior. The mechanic at the service station where I broke down told me I needed a new distributor and boot hose that attaches to the mass air flow sensor. He also indicated that the car wouldn't start unless he realigned the teeth (according to him, there are two points that need to be positioned upward) into which the timing belt is inserted. Now it sounds like a popcorn kettle when I shift from gear to gear as I accelerate and the power has significantly diminished. Traveling on the slightest incline from a stop position causes the car to want to stall unless I give it more gas. I also noticed a slight tapping from the engine (valves?) when I started the car before all of this began. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Joseph
