Default Will ford contour engine work in my mpv?

Hello, I just purchased a 2000 mpv with a "bad engine" I believe the timing chain guide has busted or it threw a rod. The van is super nice but I am finding it hard to source a replacement engine if it does come to that. Not many MPV's in the junkyard but contours are readily available. The question is, will the ford contour/mystique/cougar motor work? The obvious answer is yes, its all the same, but I am not sure if there is going to be any minor differences that will disrupt my swap or cause a cel that my wife will sure give me hell about till its out. Thanks in advance.

Are you talking about the V6 2.5L or the 4 cylinder 2.5L?

It's the 2.5. I found a 98 contour svt someone is parting out, probably too old though.

I know you said 2.5 but is it the V6 or the 4 cylinder? BOTH were 2.5L and were both available in the MPV.

I'm sorry, I was unaware both were 2.5. It is the v6.

This is what I found on wiki:

Duratec 25
The Duratec 25 is a 2.5 L (155 CID; 2544 cc) 60 V6 and was introduced in 1994. It was developed for the Ford Contour and used in the Ford Mondeo, Mercury Cougar, Mercury Mystique, Jaguar X-Type, and others. The Duratec 25 was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 1995 and 1996, and the SVT version made the list for 1998 and 1999.
An SVT version produced 195 hp (145 kW) and 165 lbft (224 Nm) in 1998. Further improvements were made in 1999 that raised power output to 200 hp (149 kW) and 169 lbft (229 Nm) and were carried over in the 2000 model,14 L/100 km (17 mpg-US). The SVT engine was used in the 1998-2000 Ford Contour SVT, as well as the Ford Mondeo ST200 which was a limited edition model produced, and sold in Europe.
Bore is 82.4 mm (3.2 in) and stroke is 79.5 mm (3.1 in) on most 2.5 L Mondeo-derived engines for a total of 2544 cc. Mazda used the same block and camshaft in their 2000 MPV. However, they reduced the size to 2.49 L to keep under a 2.5 L tax cap in Japan. It was replaced in 2002 with the larger 3.0 L Duratec 30-based Mazda AJ.

I does look like the Contour would work but as it says below "Mazda used the same block and camshaft in their 2000 MPV. However, they reduced the size to 2.49 L to keep under a 2.5 L tax cap in Japan."

I appreciate the help! Like I said, I am just worried about slight variations that would disrupt the install. I am just going to go with the newest contour I can find and see if it works. It would be really nice if someone who has actually done this would confirm or deny the compatibility of the two. I guess I am going to have to be the one. Hahaha!

MazdaTirol: the 4 cylinder engine displaces 2 L. It is in my wife's contour.

vr2jetta: if you put the SVT engine in the MPV you will probably have the fastest MVP on the planet.
I don't know it it is possible to put the Contour engine into the MVP. The SVT came only with manual transmission. Hmm.... an MVP with a manual 5 speed (or 6 speed?) transmission. That would be something to show off.

Trust me, I have had plenty of thoughts of the later model 3.0 v6 dohc swap but this is gonna be my wires van and I don't want any stupid codes getting thrown, that's why I'm probably not going to delete cats either.

Anyway, I was at the junkyard today and scooped up a 1999 cougar engine, looked a bit rough but much better than the only other option I had there. Tires hopefully tomorrow and removing the van engine is next. I will keep posting so this great mystery will be solved one way or another!
