Default 2003 MPV, overdrive button does nothing

Recently purchased 2003 MPV. (LX, 3.0L, 5 speed AT)

Vehicle behaves well and seems to shift normally. However, the overdrive button on the end of the stalk seems to do nothing. Does not downshift, and no lights appear on dash.

I have also tried looking for the "O/D OFF" light on the dash when turning the key and all the dash indicators come on, but it doesn't come on.

Any ideas? Should the O/D OFF light come on with the turn of the key?

Cheers.

The harness that runs through the shifter stem has a tendency to rub through from being moved so much when shifting. Most likely it has rubbed through. You can remove the column cover and inspect it. You can also disconnect the connector and check the switch with an ohm meter. Check all fuses also of course but thats usually the cause.

Great thanks. If this is a common failure then I am less worried.

Should the O/D light turn on when the key is first turned? I'm actually not sure where in the cluster that light is...

Cheers.

I have an MPV 2000, and am having the same problem for the O/D button, it only turns on in P, and sometime in N as well. Please let me know what you find on yours. Car drives fine, O/D works fine if I can switch it on. So, I too am suspecting the colume, anyone knows how to take the colume cover out? thanks.

I just bought a 2003 MPV and the OD button does not work and no OD light comes on. How do I tell if the tranny is shifting into the 5th gear? How many RMP's is the MPV supposed to run at 100km/hr (or 62miles/hr). At this moment it is revving at 2100rmp @ 100km/hr. Am I in fifth gear? Thanks

Dudes,
I have the exact same issue with my 2003 protegé. The overdrive button no longer seems to do anything at all. I have noticed that the shifter seems a little stiffer to move, especially between the D and 1, 2, positions. Nothing major, but could indicate the rubbing of the wiring mentioned causing the button failure.
Does anyone know if there is a diagram anywhere showing proper removal of the console parts required to access the bad wiring? I haven't realy looked yet, but I now these things can often frustrate.

Cheers,
STJ-Dude
