Angry 2001 MPV Does Not Crank...

This Mazda MPV, 2001 will not crank. I tested power to the starter and it is good. So I tested power to the starter solenoid and it tested positive for power when the key was turned, but the starter would NOT crank the motor.

So, off to the store to get another starter, installed it and I have the same problem. NO CRANK.

I read a note on line where someone replaced 2 starters, the PNP switch and they still have a NO CRANK situation. I looked at the large fuses under the hood and all look good there.

Any suggestions or solutions?

Ok, I went back outside to try to get the van started and I was moving the shifter around while trying to crank it and it popped as I was going through neutral. Now it starts every time in neutral but never in Park. I also have a hard time getting the key out of the ignition.

If anyone has some suggestions please let me know. Tomorrow morning I'm going to get a new key made from the dealer to see if that helps.

Crank Position Sensor. It's dirty, replace it.

That will stop it from cranking?

Most cars will crank but NOT fire when the CPS is bad.

Other suggestions: 1) ground wire? I like to have 1 from engine block to negative terminal.
2) Main Relays in the fuse box
3) ign switch relay
4) Safety switch in gear lever area

Replaced the starter and that did not help. Here is the video for the starter replacement.

I would pay extra attention to the transmission range sensor. This is based on your post #3. Also check the BOO (Brake On Off) switch.

I have exactly these problems!
my mechanic just replaced my starter and charged me loads, and it’s still not fixed.
everything you described is what is happening to me. Getting very frustrated.
