Default 2001 Mazda MPV Key won't come out of Ignition

Yesterday my battery went dead. Someone jump started my Mazda MPV. Now the key will not come out of the ignition. If I disconnect the battery or remove the fuse the key will come out of the ignition. What do I do?

I unplugged a small connector in the steering column on the left side to resolve that problem. Here's a pic showing it plugged in again. it's the one with the orange and yellow wire that is highlighted.
It's easy to remove the steering column shroud, it's held together with three Philips screws from underneath. remove the screws, gentle pry the two halves apart and unscrew the key light to finish the disassembly.

I have bigger problems with the ignition switch assembly now though. It might be worth it to get this resolved properly now and fairly quickly before the problems cascade into other parts and escalate into a larger repair job.

Same exact thing happened to my van it ended up being the ignition cylinder in the steering colum. If I remember correctly. But I have repaired my van so much it's almost new but continues to break down about 2 times a month POS.
