Default tune up query

I am new here, basically because I have had NO problems with my 2002 Millenia 2.5L DOHC, V6. I still don't have any problems, except for a new noise when the accelerator is pressed. I took it in to the dealer and came out with an estimate for $2788.00 work needed. I KNOW this isn't possible, but I question a lot of their statements. A mechanic friend said the 2.5 has no plug wires, distributor cap or rotor, but the dealer says I need ALL these for a tuneup to the "tune" of $400.00. Is he correct? The dealer also said I MUST replace the timing belt after 60,000 miles. I have 61,000. The dealer's also saying the noise I hear on acceleration is the idler pulley.... is this possible? It's a whooshing or shushing sound. Nothing terrible, just irritating because it wasn't there before. Help if you can and greatly appreciate your input.

Default RE: tune up query

I'd say the dealer is telling you the truth. I have a 2002 2.5 v-6 millenia with 128,000on it . Ijust blew a head gasket on the #3 cylinderRH, back middle cylinder, just over the exhaust pipe. Looks like its going to be a problem on the millenias. Doesn't have enough air back thereto keep the head cool. Up to this point its been a great car with no problems. Consumer report hasit ratedas the best car to by along with Honda andToyota. Ijust changed the timming belt with the head gasket that had to be replaced. Not a job I would recommend. I changed the head gasket myself because the dealer wanted to replace the engine for$6000. Hope this info helps, Mike 02
