Default Removing rear speakers?

How is this done? I've removed the backseat (lower and upper portions), which was easier than I expected. But the stupid plastic panel that covers the speakers will NOT come out. I've already squeezed the clips accessible from the trunk that I thought were holding it in place. It seems the sides are caught on something.

Any ideas? This is driving me crazy...

(BTW, this is a '98 Mazda Millenia S.)

Default RE: Removing rear speakers?

hello,
i replaced mine back in the summer. you are on the right track removing the seat. pop out the third brake light. it has 2 arms that clip into the rear tray(plastic). then pop out the little plastic clips that hold the tray in place. be careful these will break very easy. after that lift up in the front middle of the tray creating a slight bow and pull forward. the tray should slide out. the speakers are held in place by phillips head screws. the speakers i replaced them with used the same holes.
installation should be the reverse of removal.

i could not get my aftermarket radio to work with the stock speakers so i ran wires back to the new speakers.
