Loose gas cap- Check engine light
My wife put gas in our 1998 Millenia a few days ago. It is now at 1/2 tank and the check engine light came on. I remembered reading something about the gas cap being loose will cause this. I checked and it was not tight at all. Could this be the problem?
It was at the dealer less than a month ago because of a check engine light and some emissions parts were replaced. It runs great with no problems at all. This forum is really great and is one reason I am not going to part with my Millenia!

Yes this will cause an evap code and your check engine light to come on. Sometimes even when tightened it will do this because the rubber gasket on the cap is flattened or worn. You can buy a new cap with gasket for under ten bucks. Light should go off .

I'm having the same problem with my 00 626 we just purchased.
After we bought it, the check engine light come on.
I pulled the codes and got P0042 which is a small leak in the Evap system.
I checked the cap, and cleared the code, and I'm going to take it for a drive later.
If it comes back on, I'm going to go get a new cap.
