Default Timing belt help

Just replaced the timing belt on my '95 Miata. Got everything back together and she started up just like she should have. We let her run for almost an hour, looking for leaks, listening etc. No problems after an hour of idling. As soon as I put any load on her she started running rougher and rougher, billowing clouds of smoke. I killed the ignition just before she would have died.

Any ideas about what went (I did) wrong would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

IH
