Default Help! Water in tank.

I have a 1993 miata. About a month and a half ago I was on fumes and my friend put a half gallon or so of gas from a can that had been sitting in my yard for who knows how long in my gas tank.I started the car and got about 100 feet before it died. I was unable to get it started again. Then I realized that the gas had water in it possibly. It has been a few weeks and I have had several friends look at it .The first person thought it was the fuel pump. When the pump was removed I could see that there was,in fact, water in the gas tank. I have since determined that the pump pumps when hooked up to a different battery but when it is put back in my car it doesn't get any power. When I turn the key it doesn't start pumping.Someone else suggested that it might be a relay.Any idea what is wrong with it? I would sure appreciate any suggestions!

You can get a solution from any auto parts store that will make the water mix with the gas. Not sure how to get the pump going.

I'd drain the tank, fill with fresh fuel and a dose of ethyl alcohol (dry gas) also called fuel antifreeze at any auto parts store.

If you hook jumper cables from another vehicle to yours can you get the pump to turn on?
