Gasket Sealer When Replacing Thermostat?

Default Gasket Sealer When Replacing Thermostat?
Hi, I am replacing the thermostat in our 2008 Miata due to "Coolant Temp Out of Spec" code. The thermostat and housing come as one part, and includes a pre-installed gasket on the housing. Should I use gasket sealer on the mating surface of the block, or just install it as is, after cleaning the mating surface?

I usually apply a light smear of sealant for peace of mind.
