2018 Mazda CX-9 GT - Any idea where the cooling fan relay is located? Between the owners manual and abbreviations on the relay box....nothing.
Having issues with my cooling fan again not coming on. The suv doesnt overheat, but the darn fan just will not come on. No fuses blown. No 12v at the fan connector. Replaced the coolant temp sensor.. no luck

 

think I may have found out where they stuffed that relay... looks like it's in a separate relay box somewhere near the engine compartment relay/fuse box according to these pics. Will post back tomorrow with what I find.. cooling fan relay box is labeled 66-750 on this diagram

 

yes that is where it is at. the relay location is illustrated under the cover.

 

Does it seem that the engineers who design engine layouts all have two elbows on each arm, the tiniest strongest hands, and wrists with 350° range of motion?

 

Well it not really, engineers all the time anymore that do and generally parts placement design on most platforms is done by a department with computer "nerds"!. More like that guy/gale that has computer programing college background. Many departs seldom have engineers in departments you might think has them. And most it is simply an engineer in charge of managing a department and not actually doing the "engineering". I would say don't believe everything you read about automotive job market on the internet it is vastly different from reality. on the staff. As for my thoughts and at 6ft 180lbs I seldom have difficulty managing any service around most engine bay and under chassis by simply first reading how the auto manufacture service procedure is written and then deciding if I can slip my body parts in a different way to suit my personal way of doing things. But if my way does not work then the factory or AllData service procedure always works without trouble and works for most all humans. lol

There are threads started on most all vehicle related forums ,car, truck, motorcycle, boat airplane that is titled in one way or another "what is the hardest (fill in this area) to work on. My responses usually is the same in all those forums which is any vehicles that requires removing so many parts to get to that single problematic part and then I would say your response about the physical attribute of a person seems relevant. LOL I mean the worst is on one years F250 that the tiny oil sensors (when it leaks and needs to be replace) is labor time 6 hours LOL You have no idea the pain in customers face and sometimes rude comments directed at the shop when they see a 12 dollar sensor is going to cost them over 600 bucks to replace.

 

Yeah, that was the first part installed and the rest of the vehicle was built around it.

So, I've located the cooling fan relay, which is located right behind the driver side headlight, but everything seems to check out just fine. Tested the relay with a spare 12v battery and multimeter, and it gets continuity with around 100ohms, which I'm not sure if that's normal or not as I can't find any specs online. The relay itself is a 4 prong labeled PY8W 15 651 / V23134-J159-X536 / 12V / +=1645
I thought the diagram I posted above says there should be a fuse in the box as well, but can't see any fuses.
My cooling fan failed to work awhile back, verified by heating up the car to normal operating temps and flipping on the air conditioner to max. I thought I had solved the issue by adding another ground wire to the cooling fan ground circuit, but it seems the fix was only temporary. I've since replaced the coolant temperature sensor, even tho it tested fine initially, it was a cheap part to throw at it. The fan never seems to turn on now, and I don't see 12v at the fan connector like I used to. Tested all fuses in the main fuse box, and everything checks out. Anyone have any recommendations on what I could check? Really hate bringing it to Mazda for a few hundred dollar diagnosis!

 

Hey, I am having exact same issue. Were you able to get it fixed ? Do you know where the cooling fan relay is located ? I tested all 3 relays located in fused box near engine but they all passed 9v battery test. It would be helpful if you can respond please.

 

Hello! Unfortunately, in the end we ended up replacing the radiator fan with a genuine Mazda fan to fix the issue.
