Red face What are brakes supposed to feel like?

Just installed new rear rotors and brake pads on my 2014 CX-9 (fwd). I was told by a local shop afterwards that they think the brake pedal now feels a bit softer than it should. My wife and I don’t notice anything different. I then bled all brakes at the four calipers starting from the right rear and working forward to the driver’s front side. No bubbles or air. Fluid is a urine color yellow. The pedal still feels the same and we don’t notice anything different from the way it was before the new brakes were put on. Should I be concerned?

Question: Does the 2014 CX-9, or any CX-9 year for that matter, have a softer pedal than most vehicles out there? Not super firm? In other words should it take a bit more foot pressure on the pedal (maybe down halfway) to engage the brakes? When I slam down on the pedal, of course the vehicle stops immediately but the pedal is not at the floor.

Thanks!

You are asking a subjective question? If they feel the same before and after your brake service, then likely that is correct.
If you have a question as to the safety and proper function of your brakes, then have the brake system inspected by a service change like Firestone.
Wherever you go let them inspect it without telling them you just serviced the work and see what they say?

Awesome advice. I think that’s smart to say nothing. It needs a brake system flush anyway as it was due for it. Had it last done about 26k ago. Thank you!

The 2008 - 2015 (TB) series CX-9s do have a softer /weird pedal compared to other vehicles. They often need a ABS module bleed to firm up the pedal travel. ( Done via scan tool )

Good to know. Is this something any qualified shop can do? Sounds like it’s adjusted through the computer then, correct? Using the scan tool. Should I expect this to cost a good deal? Thank you!

Most qualified shops and any shop I would say that has an ASE blue sign at least one of their employees will have a certification to perform the brake bleed and has a professional scan tool. It would be billed at 1 hour so the cost can vary. Seems you only put USA in your signature info I cant give you the estimated shop rates in your state, county and city. In my shop it would be $150.00 plus fluid.

I called around and it’s about $150-$175 to do the work. I’m in central Virginia. Thanks for the info. Sounds like it’s right in line with the rough estimate you provided. Thank you!
