Default Replacement Key Fob

I took my 2008 CX-9 to the dealership and they said that the key fob was busted. The dealership quoted a replacement at over $500, so for the last few months I have been using the metal key to lock, unlock, and start the car. I am becoming annoyed with the little metal key and am wondering if it is possible to program a new key myself and also if I can use one of the sleek newer keys or if I need to find a 2008 credit card shaped key.

Thanks for the help!
James

Check with a local locksmith. One here told me that he can supply and program them for about half the cost charged at a dealership.

The wife dropped her key fob for the 2008 CX-9 in the elevator shaft and the building won't call the elevator operator unless we pay $2000. I still have the other key and am curious about getting another one too. If anyone else went through this, please update this thread. Meanwhile, I'll ask a few locksmiths.
