Default Glove Box Arm

Does anyone know what the function/purpose is of the small sliding arm that comes out of the dash and connects to the glove box door on the right side? I was removing my glove box door yesterday and accidentally broke off the end of this and can see no obvious purpose for it. There of course must be. Need to know if I should replace it. Thx, Mark

Its a mini shock absorber, so when you open the glove-box it doesn't drop open straight away, instead its a slow, gentle, quiet opening.

Thank you! Do you have any source for how I would replace this if I bought the part? Looking for removal sequence I guess. Not sure if it takes more than just removing the glove box door. Thanks, Mark
