i know for the mazda3, it requires a special oil filter, not sure if it is the same with the cx-7, calling the dealer is the best way to find out though

CX-7 does use the same cartridge style oil filter used on the 2.3 engine of the 6 and 3. Mazda part number is L321-14-302 if that helps to crossreference. Has superseeded to a L321-14-302-9U now which includes the needed 'O' ring to seal back up the filter cap. Make sure to use a new 'O' ring so the old swollen one does not get pinched when reinstalling and cause a nasty oil leak. Also use care in removing and installing the plastic filter cap as it is suseptible to cracking or damage if using a pair of pliers or some other type of clamping instrument. Filter cap wrench is the best tool to use for the job as it will not damage the cap at all.
