Default Is CX-7 worth fixing?

I can get a 2008 CX-7 for basically the cost of towing. Is it worth fixing?

The car has been sitting for 3 years. In 2017 it was diagnosed with the dreaded bad turbo and timing chain. Repairs would cost around $3,000. This looks to be a very common problem. Some online posts suggest that in around 2016 Mazda finally figured out the problem and it can now be reliably fixed. Is this true?

I considered swapping the 2.3L turbo engine with a 2.5L non-turbo from a 2010. This is not easily doable because of all the computer and interior parts that have to be replaced to make the ECM match. What I read is that you basically have to have a whole 2.5L donor vehicle.

So my realistic option is to have the turbo fixed. Is this something only a dealer can do reliably, or can a good shop also be successful?

$3,000 for a nice car isn't so bad, if it can keep running for a few years. But the owner did the same research in 2017 that I just did, and decided it wasn't worth the risk.

Any opinions?

Thanks in advance
