While I don't buy the let's a lot of dirt through theory, it has also been said that the filter oil could affect the MAF sensor in time and destroy it... especially if over oiled during the cleaning process.
I did put a K&N panel in my 3 series shortly after getting the car and decided that it was a waste of money.
It wasn't in there long enough to have to be cleaned, but when I considered the initial cost, plus having the expense and hassle factor of cleaning and reoiling it, plus the downtime, I figure I could easily purchase 6 or 7 regular filters and get the same mileage and performance as before w/o the trouble.
