Exclamation 2007 CX-7: Horrendous Engine Noise!

I am new here (Howdy!) and a proud owner of a 2007 CX-7 Turbo with 67k miles on it. I bought it used from a friend at a Chevy dealer a year ago and love it... until recently.

Upon starting and at low RPM (i.e. sitting at a light, in gear), it just started making a VERY LOUD noise from the engine compartment/firewall/dash which sounds either like "water rushing through the dashboard" (heater core?) or "a bunch of small pully wheels that have gone bad" but the sound will quiet down and go away. I can put it into drive, drive off and the noise will stay away UNTIL I slow down for a stop sign or traffic light and the RPMs are lower. It will again, quiet down and go away.

What can be causing this? I mean, IT'S LOUD but doesn't seem to affect the performance of the vehicle. I also noticed a strong electrical burning odor recently, too.

Please help before my car fails on me!

Remove the drive belt, start it up & see if the noise goes away. Could be the alternator bearing.
