Sometimes it is just in our head...those noises/voices that no one else can hear...

When no one else is around.....

You can ask yourself a question

You can answer the question you ask yourself

but when you ask yourself a question and say "HUH"! you know you have a problem.

If your mechanically inclined you could try taking off the serpentine belt and running the engine for a very short time and if the noise is not there you then have to play a bit turning all things driven by the belt like the alternator etc.
Or the belt itself. I have a 33 year old Dodge truck Every 3 - 6 months I get the belt whine. I take a small dab of dielectric grease and spread it across the grooves on the belt in one spot. I'm good for another 3 - 6 months.

Just when I though I have read all the possible DIY bad advise I get a surpise and another one pops up! LOL
Sorry but this DIY recommendation should NOT be done. I strongly advise NOT to follow this advise about using grease on any drive pulley..
In every case if the belts are making noise there is a problem with the belt or the pully. Carefully examining the belt off the engine can revile what is causing any noisy like a reoccurring one especially.

Its not a screw drive extension. You take the rounded ball end and place it firmly pressing against your ear and then touch using the fastener at a suspected area that may be causing the noise/sound. The sound will be carried through the tubing and up through the Philips driver and you can hear with better degree the sound and the type of sound. Its not really any difference then the stethoscope shop mechanics version that I also pictured. The difference is most garages, and a DIY have those items to be able to make a sound locating device instead of buying one. Many old mechanics have used this method for decades, In fact it was an old codger machinic in the mid 70's that showed me this tool modification to listen to a timing chain on a running engine to hear if the was worn and needing replacing.

Interesting post. My son has a senior position with a Chinese car manufacturer and because he is the only one at the top that has the knowledge they fly him all over Australia to solve warranty problems and the stories he tells stuns me on the lack of basic knowledge the dealers have. I'm not talking technical matters but a basic understanding of how things work. He loves his job though.
