. I have the cable running from the phone to the USB port in the armrest console. I would prefer the USB to be available closer to the clip, but it works. The mount is OEM looking. It would be nice to have wireless AA so that I had no wires (which I could do with one of the available dongles I suppose), but on a long trip I would have to charge the phone anyway...

Purchase yourself a dongle, hook up wireless and keep your phone in your pocket
TY I’ve considered it, can you recommend one?
edit: I think that this is the best idea so I ordered one off AMAZON

LOL, the OP asks for your phone position when using CarPlay, and most posters completely ignore what he asks for.
His phone is supposed to work with the Mazda infotainment center, meaning he does not need to access it.
Therefor it shouldn't matter where he put his phone.

The OP is asking where people are putting the phone as it needs to be connected to the usb in the center console and there is no dedicated slot to use for a phone near the connection point. That is what they meant about other posters not directly answering the question they asked.

They OP did not ask about a dedicated slot they asked about where to put the phone. Quote: "I love my CX-5 quietest cabin to date but where do you put your phone once connected to car play?"
With the correct length USB cable, the phone can be placed anywhere in the vehicle and why wouldn't that include all places commentors have mentioned?

TY, and having exposed white, black, and many other colored wires showing is why I’m going to try a dongle that BMJ suggested. I will post back again how it went. For some owners exposed wires are a big turn OFF!
Sounds like a good solution for you.
My black USB cable is tucked under the lower lip of the black center console trim and is pretty much hidden from anyone's view.
Aside from my extra input/output ports in my glove box I also installed USB ports inside my glovebox as well 2 USB cables on the passenger side all can be used to input to the Mazda info center commend control or as a charging port.
Placing anything on the vent is really a possible place to either damage the device or distract the vents air flow. There is also the possibility of safety should the device securing anything become dislodge and fall distracting the driver.
Just a dumb place to put anything even car scent items.
NO I have not detailed my interior yet so ya it is a little dirty!
