TSB re 2021 Mazdas

Got a response from Mazda customer experience team this morning. I think I’ll sit back for a couple of weeks then find a dealership with a loaner policy.
Hey Callisto, does the fix described in the TSB look like a complex affair to you?It looks like something that would challenge a NASA engineer, to the less mechanically sophisticated amongst us, like me.
Mazda response here:
“Thank you for contacting Mazda Customer Experience Center.
My name is xxxxxxx and I am a case manager, you would have to take your vehicle for a diagnosis. You can let the dealership know you have a case open with Mazda.
Thank you for being a Mazda customer and have a great day.
If you have any questions in the future, you can reach me directly using the number and extension below. “

It is labor intensive but not in my experience technical. I would guess the Dealership would at least use an experience TECH that has disabled and reassembled heads and short blocks but not necessary as long as they are certified. Maybe however that is why MAZDA would actually require using a Mazda factory certified technician or an ASE certified automotive technician only to service the project and sign off on the service. It also requires some specialized tools which my guess the dealership would also need to have available, and it may not be a normal service tool that any Tech would have? My guess it would be at the dealership for about a week. Estimate 12-14 hours labor? (I did not verify with ALL-Data the exact labor time) . If you do this I suggest working with the service manager and parts department to first have them order any and all the parts needed for this service. This way should one part take a week or longer to arrive you are not having to deal with loaners or rental cars?
I know that in my shop it would be a 3-5 day project because I could not devote a single Tech on one job constantly.
The editing out the name **** out the representative you talk to is commendable but posting the name (and they expect it is not confidential and could be posted ) may be helpful to others having this problem a direct name to contact ? Just a thought!

Cheers Callisto
At the bottom of the 50 page TSB it says something about it being 4.5 hours labor. Hopefully that doesn’t mean there will be a dispute between what the dealership wants to be paid and what Mazda are willing to reimburse them.

I saw that after I posted? But not sure how they came up with that? That is why as I have been saying TSB are not really wrote up for the general public. LOL If there is a labor and parts concern for renbursement to the dealership that is not your responsibility, or not to be rude concern (don't worry about it) that will be between MAZDA and the dealership.
The tsb says work shall be accomplished by a master mazda technician. Still would make me nervous. I've done this job several times on other engines. It's not that big a deal. It's very detail oriented though. 4.4 hrs sounds about right if your set up and done the job before. But if I was the dealership I would discourage the customer because frankly there's no real money in a 4.4 hour warranty repair. The tech will be on this job all day. One thing I am shocked about is the criteria that they're calling for to make this TSB eligible for your car. Is simply states low oil level and the engines not leaking. So this repair could move forward if you leave a quick lube place and they only puts in 3 quarts of oil and you drive to the dealership. I'm an aircraft mechanic also and it's all about documentation and verification. I'm shocked that Mazda after taking a year to produce this tsb did not come up with a procedure for documenting oil burn rate.
The more I think about it I guess it doesn't matter if it meets the criteria or not. If you come in there and your engines low on oil but the seals aren't responsible, if you're in that VIN range they're going to be responsible shortly cuz Mazda knows those seals are all bad, in that vin range.

BTW I looked and the labor hours (maybe you should?) is based on MAZDA not in none warranty labor service times so this is also for MAZDA and dealership and not for general public to debate over?

As for the comment no reall money, dealership do not have a choice! This is in there contract agreement to be able to be a authorized seller of MAZDA automobiles. They can not say NO to performing warranty work!
Just wonder how you have done this procedure on MAZDA when it is relatively new?? Maybe you meant similar jobs? IDK. The Skyactiv engine and specifically the new version has only been around a few years and this problem for the most part just started to happen? Not many have gone over the 100K out of warranty showing this problem, at least that has been documented on any forum I am aware of?
Comparing the Aeronautical industry to automotive is so far apart regarding documentation and I am sure you get updates on service repairs that you once did on a regular basis and then a safety or new procedure comes into requirement that you must follow and document even if you think it is ridiculous. I know I did when I worked for Cessna as a General maintenance and Avionics.

Ok well you don't understand how TSB are formed. And once again that's why they are not designed for use in the general public.
