Is PPF on the hood worth it and car wash

I keep a larger than most distance from the vehicle in front of me which helps with avoiding the rocks and resulting chips.[/QUOTE]
There is no real way to avoid rock chips no matter how defensive you drive! Don't fool yourself.
Look specifically at the latest posting #4 all from my dash cam.

Yeah, my 2018 CX-5 windshield got pelted a lot. But then every car I have had in the past 20 years has as well. Ford Probe, Chevy HHR, 2005 and 2014 Ford Mustang, Hyundai 2001 Santa Fe.
They make a protective film for the windshield, but from what the installer tells me, it isn't great for daily drivers as windshield wipers will marr it over time. It also costs more to have it put on than a new windshield ~ $800 at my place (which is interesting considering buying the film for DIY is only about $200 bucks from the company). Seems excessive if you are going to need to replace it regularly.

I am not convinced that applying anything over the complete exterior of a windshield is 100% safe.
Windshield glass is actually a highly complex design.
I have not read any real testing data from independent and reputable testing sources to have and details. Personally, until there are its not for me.
Nothing personal about that website but they skate around technical and safety information about their product and using on a windshield.

Not like Rain-X which is just for water beading, this protects the glass from nicks and chips. Another interesting thing to me was the installer told me he didn't do windshield films in '21 when I had my PPF done as 3M had done many years of testing to try and bring one to market, but ultimately decided it was not possible with the standards they wanted. He started carrying the exoshield recently due to customers asking for it, so he caved and started selling it.

Unfortunately, today's windshield replacement is nothing like days of old.
It even requires recalibration of electronics after replacement.
Electronics which don't do much more than give drivers a false sense of security warnings/features to not drive safely or pay attention while doing so.
While simultaneously draining your battery and your wallet.
