I changed the oil in our new CX 5 for the first time today, first off the factory filter is very tight. I bought and used a 5 quart jug of Mobile 1 and according to the dip stick am still a half quart or so low if it's a 1 quart dip stick. With filter change it should only take 4.6 quarts. Has anybody else noticed this? Also, does the aluminum washer on the plug need replaced every time. As far as I know, aluminum washers do need replaced every time. I had a plastic or nylon one that I put on.

 

watch out for that washer. i only use copper now, aluminum is ok. but the plastic/nylon one will loosen. i think the heat has something to do with it. i used one a long time ago because i could not find a copper or alum one in the size i needed. a short time later, i noticed a drip, and the drain plug was not even finger tight. after i tightened it, it happened again. so i got copper washers, and switched. if you are fast, only about a cup of oil will come out.

 

**VERY IMPORTANT**

The latest Skyactive engines, ie CX5 & latest Mazda 3 & 6 have very small oil galleries, there fore the oil takes approximately 5 minutes to settle.

To check the oil correctly go for a drive and fully warm up the engine, then park it on a flat surface, turn the engine off & wait 5 minutes, then check. I cannot stress enough how important this process is.

 

The oil was plenty settled, I have been changing oil for a very long time so I am aware of the process. I just don't understand why the dipstick is reading the way it is. Thanks for the tip on the washer I will watch it. Never had a plug back out.

 

Did you follow my Factory Mazda Advice? I've been changing oil for 18yrs. These new engine are like nothing before them.

 

I checked the oil several times over about a half hour and it was level. I know the default is to think I'm doing something wrong but I'm just reading a dip stick. The oil was settled and it was level.

 

I see the same issue on every oil & filter change! The specified capacity is 4.8 quarts, but the dipstick shows almost a quart low with this amount. I find that I need to put 5.5 quarts in to have the stick read full. Please note that I warm the engine up properly, and then shut if off, and wait 15 or 20 minutes, just to be sure that I'm getting a proper reading, but it's the same thing every time. If I want the dipstick to read full, then I need to put in 5.5 quarts!

5.5 will be way way over full.

For the 2.5 non turbo petrol engine, 4.8 to 4.9 is bang on whats need to bring the oil level to the correct mark.

Turbo engine should be about 5.0 to 5.1

 

▼ Inspecting Engine Oil Level

1.Be sure the vehicle is on a level surface.
2. Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature.
3. Turn it off and wait at least 5 minutes for the oil to return to the sump.
4. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, and reinsert it fully.

When inspecting the engine oil level, pull out the dipstick straight without twisting.

5. Pull it out again and examine the level. The level is normal if it is between the MIN and MAX marks. If it is near or below MIN, add enough oil to bring the level to MAX.

CAUTION Do not overfill the engine oil. This may cause engine damage.

6. Make sure the O-ring on the dipstick is positioned properly before reinserting the dipstick.
7. Reinsert the dipstick fully.

 

I've read the same thing many times. I can only tell you that following that exact methodology, when I check the oil it's a half guart low on the stick with 5 full Quarts.
