Off road abilities
Yikes! That sounds very nerve-wracking, not to say life-threatening if you hadn't made it. People here carry InReach into those places. I know what you mean about how helpful low gear can be. Used to live in Utah and Colorado.Definitely helps to hold the car back going down and to clamber over anything going up. High clearance helps too for sure.
In response to the original question: it all depends on the roads you will be driving on. I was on the big island once long ago and I suspect you could go everywhere some need to drive with a sports car. The more aggressive the SUV the more roads and trails you can utilize.
I would investigate the specific roads you will be driving on. I bet a CX-5 would be more than enough but not make it on the trails. Remember, if your son has a serious off road vehicle you may be able to get to the most remote places when you need to.

Thanks. Good to know my CX-5 will be fine for most roads. He decided to just finish working on his current 4x4 truck after talking to the mechanic neighbor he has. He said the rougher roads go to beaches that are mostly only for surfing so he could use a dirt bike that can carry a board for the few times he'd go to those.
