I'll agree with that.
Though I generally don't mess with my vehicle ECU on my motorcycles, I only ever replaced the entire chip designed specifically for the make/model I was modifying.
Anything else would not "safely" get the optimum requirements I was looking for.
Vehicles are no different than overclocking a computer, if you don't use the right parts and do it correctly, you'll find yourself staring at a useless piece of hardware in a hurry.
Or as Jelly Roll sings "Damaged beyond repair"

ECU Performance Calibrating is more intense then most think!

Here is a sample of a customer's short data logging prior to me making PID adjustments.
So no it is nothing that a Chip can do nor is it really like a CPU clocking?
Contrary to what is believed and posted and or advertised from companies supplying kits and ECU programing the proper way adjusting engine perimeters is based on the specific RPM range data logging the evet and then making the appropriate adjusts at least in small grouping if not a single adjustment at a time. The average ECU adjustments average time for those that are experience is 30-45 minutes. If anyone tells you differently, they either have no clue really what they are doing or are skipping steps and grouping large perimeter (lazy) changes and hoping it works.

I realize its not exactly a performance vehicle but that doesn't mean we can make it more fun.
What have you done to your CX5?
Is it your first Mazda ? -- My accessory purchases are usually restriced to only OE stuff which serves some fundamental function - all-weather-floor mats ,Sun visor etc - Enjoy !

It's much closer to overclocking than you think.
When you overclock a computer it's not just the CPU you are contending with, like a vehicle, it's the entire package from motherboard/CPU/fans/cooling system/RAM/power supply/graphics card(s), sound, etc.
Tweaking one thing effects all the rest.
After 35-40 minutes you will just be getting to the part when you can start to make any changes at all, RAM overclocking alone can take over an hour.
In many places, like my state, it generally costs more per hour for a computer tech than it does for your vehicle tech.
Even though in some instances, they are one in the same.
