Had my repair completed yesterday at South Tacoma Way Mazda, and it was a good experience, I even got a courtesy vehicle. The master technician sent me a video stating that he had replaced eight exhaust valve seals, and that vehicle will no longer burn oil . Good luck with the repair everyone.

Fantastic! Do you know if they removed the cylinder head or just the valve cover to do repair?

Sorry 007, I don’t know. Just now looking at work order and it says he replaced (in video he said “upgraded”) all (8) exhaust seals and rocker cover gasket. The tsb has a detailed “how to” included, maybe that will shed light on how the repair was made.

Yes sounds like they are doing the job with cylinder head in place. Thanks for info.

Silly question. What would the cost be for the **** retentive people (like me) to just have the exhaust valve seals on our cars replaced without jumping thru all of the Mazda hoops? I got this car to pass on to my daughter who is a traveling nurse. I regularly over maintain everything. If it’s a potential problem, and the fix is reasonable, why not just do it? I am not really a wait until it breaks person.

I have heard 4.4 hours, 8 exhaust valve seals and a valve cover gasket. About what would that cost in indiana?

All you need do is call your local shop and they'll give you an estimate.
Mazda valve seal kits are around $70, and the cover gasket is around $30.
Average cost of the gasket replacement including parts is $239
Average cost of valve seals replacement including parts $123 per valve or $492
I'd say you're looking at a minimum of $750 with disposal fees, shop rags, tax, etc.
