Low oil situation on 2021 CX-5 nonturbo
For that prior oil change, if they refilled using the 'book' specification of oil, that amount will show just slightly below halfway between the min/max holes on the dipstick. Being a DIYer, I know this for certain, and it's also a well known fact in the DIY community. I always add a small amount of additional oil, beyond the 5 quart jug, in order to bring the level closer to the max mark. So if they used the book spec to refill your engine, then the consumption would be somewhere around 1/4 quart in 5K miles - certainly not a big deal at all. Now you might think they used an amount of oil the previous time that matches the 3/4 mark you just saw, but that's definitely not certain at all. Given that they're working with a possible oil consumption issue, that makes it highly likely they added more than 5 quarts of oil, as a 'just in case' measure.
So with the checking you'll be doing going forward, you will be able to determine for certain what the actual consumption is with your vehicle. I suspect that you'll discover the consumption to be VERY minimal, just as it is on both of the CX-5 in our family.
And one other thing I'll mention is that I, and many other DIYers, use that same 5K OCI for the NA engine, even though the book says 7.5K is ok. That said, I have no interest in getting into an 'oil' discussion with anyone. I'm just mentioning it to you as an FIY.
Ok once again let me try to correct? Explain about reading the dip stick on a *Skyactiv Mazda Gasoline engine.
1) Wait until the engine is completely COLD
2) *Mazda dipstick low and upper line is the CORRECT oil level for the engine operating. DO NOT get in the habit of filling to the top line. Or what some from OLD SCHOOL checking a oil dip stick call full or Max level!
For concerns about oil usage or leaks undetected, measure the oil early in the morning when the engine is completely COLD making a note of the oil indication on the dip stick and the exact millage. Then recheck at about 500 miles the same EXACT way!
If you are burning and not leaking oil, then an engine health inspection should be done by a trained professional Auto Certified Technician (NOT A MECHNIC) using the proper testing equipment.

First post. My daughter just purchased a 2023 s select so I am doing a little reading and learning from owners here.
The reply from Callisto is not what the owners manual says to do regarding checking the oil level. I know the manual isn’t always the best source for technical info and Callisto is a senior member here.
I have been wrenching on my own vehicles since the 1970’s and have done many hundreds of oil changes so I know a little bit about vehicles. Why is the instructions in the owners manual not to be followed, specifically about the instruction to fill to the max spot on the dipstick which Callisto warns NOT to do?
Looking forward to learning and sharing experiences regarding the cx5 with fellow forum members.

The dip sticks on automatic transmission have been this way for decades and the precibal and empirical reason is exactly the same with a gasoline engines oil dip stick. It's just that the explanation for DIY since about 2000 has not been absorbed or maybe IMHO because of the old school logic never been re learned with why a simple oil dip stick measurements are the way they are and how they should be used to fill the oil in an engine!
I might add that the capacity that is in the Factory service guides and published in many places does not include the important FACT that that quantity was based on a new engine siting on the development engine platform when it was designed. That means not one drop of oil was in the engine and the quantity was based on a formula not physically measuring the fluid itself.
Hence why you check the dip stick when you do an oil and filter service because the actual quantity may vary from time to time and also why the 2 lines indicated OPERATING range of engine oil.
Oil will also expand slightly when it reaches operating temperature so running it exactly to the top line you will technically be over filled if ever so slightly during some engine operating and ambient operating temperatures.
