Have you contacted your local Mazda dealer parts department?

Have one on my 2016.5 CX-5 GT as well. It's right at the height of the door latch assembly. Haven't seen it on any of the diagrams, yet, named and labeled as to what it is. But it's probably reasonable to guess it's a door latch access hatch, or something similar, probably for the wiring associated with that assembly.

Don't happen to have a Mazda factory shop manual for the car (yet), though I'm assuming those would have all the relevant diagrams in there.

I do not have the answer as I cannot even find that rear interior panel in the on line parts catalog. It must be there, just not obvious. There are six pages of Interior Door Panels and Parts but I cannot find a rear door interior panel. I think the Mazda dealer is your only hope.

Just out of curiosity, why did you remove the cover? I understand that it is there to allow access to the liftgate locking mechanism to manually open the liftgate in the event of a battery failure.

It is indeed for the emergency access to the door latch. From my owners manual (Gen2 2021 CX5) but not much different from wha I remember from our Gen1 2014 CX5.

When the Liftgate Cannot be Opened
If the battery is dead, the liftgate cannot be unlocked and opened.

In this case, the liftgate can be unlocked by taking care of the dead battery situation.

Refer to Jump-Starting (Search).

If the liftgate cannot be unlocked even if the dead battery situation has been resolved, the electrical system may have a malfunction.

In this case, the liftgate can be opened using the following procedure as an emergency measure.
  1. Wrap the end of a flathead screwdriver in a cloth and remove the cover on the interior surface of the liftgate using it.

  2. (Without power liftgate)

Turn the lever to the right to unlock the liftgate.

Push the liftgate while pressing the lever down.

After performing this emergency measure, have the vehicle inspected at an Authorized Mazda Dealer as soon as possible.

I found this part for the 2014. I could not find a corresponding page in 2013 models, but it should be similar.
