My wife and I went to test drive a 2022 cx5 2.5, after cold cranking I instantly heard “tapping” in the engine. We drove it, got back and the tapping seemed to have gone away. I know the 2018-2021had the SB for the HLA Issues. Is this a problem with the 2022 as well? Thoughts.

There are so many reason why you herd what you did. I would not jump to conclusions. HLA were , shall we say have had some interesting history on various platform but if the engine was new or less then 5000 -15000 miles I may want to look into a few things but more miles then it would be more how the owner(s) kept on on service and how they treated their vehicle.

It’s not uncommon to have HLA talk tic tic tic tic a bit until the engine gets to complete operating temperature which is coolant 130f , engine and transmission oil temperature 180f .min.

You would need to post a short video of the engine cold start, but in one stationary position NOT moving your camara around.
But as I said its for the most part of your description. You could also at your next oil and filter service add a can of sea foam that may reduce some varnish build up caused from extended oil and filter services?

Would also need to know:

Miles on engine and the service miles of the last 2 oil and filter changes. This information if it were done at a dealer would be part of the service history you can get at Mazda dealership.

Had a 22 -- It was common for the high pressure fuel pump to make a loud tappng sound and then dissipate after warm up - ITs on the right side of the cover - My 25 never does it -
