Hello Everyone
I am working on changing the air cabin filter in my 2021 CX-5 Reserve. Can anyone refresh my memory re the glove compartment damper?
Have I broken it or did it never have a hydraulic slow type lowering when you open the compartment? The other half tells me it never descended slowly once opened, but I’m not so sure.
You're fine, it is a "stay" damper.
I can actually change the cabin filter in my 2020 without unhooking it. Attachment 8517
Thank you !obstah, and sorry for being dense but I can’t find a description of a “stay” damper anywhere. Are you saying the glove box should open slowly, or are you saying I have to eat crow with the missus as the glove box damper is not intended to gently lower the door but just let it fall open abruptly?
Thanks again

Ok so hang on I just went and took some pictures for you......
When you open the glove box there are 2 tabs at the top. In the picture I circled the right. There is also one on the left in the same position. You simply push gently on both side close to the tabs at the same pressure and time and the tabs will release and allow the door to drop enough to gain access to reaching in and pulling out the cabin filter. Once you have changed the filter then carefully and slowly close the door and the tab should reset easily. If there is too much resistance, then with one hand push gently on the close to the tab and it will go. When first doing this the tabs are very tight but after this procedure a couple of time and when you get acclimated to the procedure you can change the cabin filter from the driver seat in about 2 minutes.

Castillo, first of all thank you for going to all that trouble, but I already know how to change the air filter. My question is should the glove box in a 2021 cx5 reserve open gently or abruptly? The damper is inside a cylinder which hints to me that there should be some “hydraulic” effect that allows the glove box to open gently. That’s all I want to confirm.
You really went to a lot of trouble there Castillo, thank you again.

Ah, thank you OKE. Dealer may have broken it when they were checking my filter yesterday. Or maybe it was me when I was practicing changing it. I should have taken the short cut posted on here by Castillo, and left the damper alone, oh well off the mazda parts store I go.

Don't feel bad I broke mine when I did all the mods to the inside of my glove box. You may see that I installed a light, CD player and relocated my USB and other power supply ports original in the forward part of the center console. I also added extension USB charging cables for the passenger so you can charge or power a device without having it in the closed glove box or laying untidily on the center console.
