Gear Shifter Button Sticking – 2017 CX-5 AWD Grand Touring
Hey everyone,
Looking for some advice on an issue I’ve been having with my 2017 CX-5 AWD Grand Touring (90K miles). The car is in great shape—regular oil changes, new brake pads and rotors, new tires, new battery, etc.
I live in Maine, and with the cold weather lately, I’ve noticed that the button on my gear shifter sometimes gets stuck in the depressed position, and I can’t get it to release. When this happens:
Has anyone experienced this? Any recommendations or solutions? Appreciate any insight—thanks in advance!

I live in Maine, and with the cold weather lately, I’ve noticed that the button on my gear shifter sometimes gets stuck in the depressed position, and I can’t get it to release. When this happens:
- The shifter moves freely with very little pressure.
- If the car is on and I shift into Park, I can’t turn the ignition off.
- If the car is off, I can’t shift out of Park.
Has anyone experienced this? Any recommendations or solutions? Appreciate any insight—thanks in advance!
As Alex replied I would also say compress air and I would recommend an electric parts cleaner (spray can) first it cleans and leaves no residue.
I also would not recommend regular WD-40 though they do make an electrical version it is called Specialist Contact Cleaner Spray.
I use a product called DeoxIT D5 (around $20 for a 5oz so it's not cheap) for all my electrical cleaning including my stereo, home studio, musical instruments, amplifiers.
It does a nice job cleaning any dirt or dust from switches and control ***** and then I use a can of compressed air after.
Occasionally it may take several times on really dirty items.
There is always the possibility your switch is worn and that is causing the sticking.
It may need replacing plus it also tied in with other safety measures (brakes) that may be causing the issue.
I believe the new switches have been updated with materials that do not wear as easily.
